Have you been stuck with the same physical practice for years? Do you yearn for progression? Are you a complete beginner and wanting to get your basics right? Are you confused by certain poses or wondering why certain asanas just don’t feel good? This series of workshops is designed to help you develop a deeper understanding of your physical practice, gain anatomical knowledge, shed light on your personal strengths and weaknesses and set you up with a solid and sustainable practice that you can continue to build on for the rest of your life.
Every yoga asana has five main physical elements - The joint positioning, the muscles that engage, the muscles that stretch, the bandhas and of course the breath. In a regular class there simply is not the time to dive into all these details for every pose. This can leave new students feeling confused and more seasoned practitioners to a place of stagnation.
In this series of workshops that will take place every two months apart, Jesse and Sian will break down the the most common vinyasa asanas piece by piece and teach you the underlying anatomical principles that open you up to a deeper understanding of your own practice.
Workshop 3: Chaturanga Dandasana
January 18, 2020

This week we dive deeper into that all so illusive of poses - chaturanga dandasana!
This is the asana that most of us (students and teachers, get wrong.) The repetitive nature of vinyasa yoga means we move through this pose many times in a class and unless alignment is perfect every time we are setting ourselves up for injuries.
It's a tough one to master, that’s why we decided to dedicate a whole workshop to it - But master it we must if we are hoping to avoid shoulder injuries, build a strong vinyasa practice and progress to arm balances one day!

Workshop 4: Surya A Master Class! In this workshop we take the key points from workshops one to three and apply them to the series of asanas that we call ‘surya A’. This series of asanas lies at the heart of every flow class, it is the blueprint for many of the more advanced poses and getting it right will benefit your entire flow practice.
Expect a very active and engaging workshop with lots of moving about on your mat. Learn how to marry your breath with your movement and find the ultimate ‘moving meditation.’ Discover how to modify and adjust the sequence for your own personal level and give your basics a real fine tuning.
Workshop 5: The Way of the Warriors. Dive into the standing postures with a closer look at warrior poses one, two and three. These standing postures are the blueprint for many of the more advanced postures so a good understanding of what you are trying to achieve is crucial to a progressive practice. We look at the primary focus of each pose, how to achieve it and modifications to suit your ability.
Workshop 6: Twist it out. During this workshop we look at the underlying principles of twisted poses, their many benefits and how to achieve the most common of them. Learn how to deepen your twisting practice safely and effectively using some basic anatomy hacks.
COMPLETED Workshop 1: Breathe and Fold was held on September 21, 2019. Yoga begins with the breath so this is where we start. In this workshop we will be taking things right back to basics with a refreshed look at the most common breathing techniques used in most vinyasa yoga classes. We address some of the real reasons you may not be able to touch your toes! Discover how to engage actively in your folds, recruiting key muscle groups to build strength in these positions while also finding more depth and stability. Pick up some interesting tips and ultimately find new appreciation and focus in your folds.
COMPLETED Workshop 2: Backbending was held on November 16, 2019. A big beautiful back-bend looks so graceful don’t you think! Getting into one may feel just the opposite for some of us though! Practiced correctly, back-bending feels energizing, uplifting and incredibly good. Practiced poorly, back-bending accumulates tension in the body and can lead to spinal injury over time. Whether you are practicing bridge pose or urdhva dhanurasana (upwardfacing bow), the principles of proper engagement and alignment are the same. In this workshop you will learn how to apply basic anatomical principles to safely and effectively achieve your back-bending goals - Your spine will thank you for it! Learn the importance of healthy hip mobility for back-bending and how your shoulders and chest could be the real thing that holds you back from enjoying a big juicy back-bend. *These workshops are for beginners, experienced yogi's, fitness guru's, other yoga instructors, young, old....everybody really. *
